Professor Rivas belongs to the Faculty of Chemical Sciences, Department of Polymers at the University of Concepción, Chile, since 1980. He received as Biochemist at the University of Concepción (1976) and their PhD in Chemistry at the University of Concepcion, in 1980, under the advisory of Prof. Juan Bartulín.

During 1989-1991 carried out a posdoc at the Tuebingen University, Germany by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellows.
From 1981 leader of the research group at the University of Concepción about Synthesis and Applications of -Functional Polymers, Polyelectrolytes, Resins with Retention Properties for Pollutants Ions. –Polychelatogens in combination with ultrafiltration membranes. Polymer-metal complexes as biocides. Nanocomposites from polypropylene.

Professor Rivas has published above 340 articles in ISI Journals and 20 chapter of books in the fields of polymer chemistry and applications to remove pollutants, h factor: 28, Cites: 3300, Average citation: 10.57.

Also has participated in more than 500 national and international congresses.

Adviser of 20 graduate thesis (17 PhD thesis and 3 Master Science thesis) and above 60 undergraduate thesis (Chemists, Biochemists, and Analytical Chemists), and 5 postdoc grants.
